Weekly Smorgasbord

A few links from the week:

"Why do so many advocate making gay marriage illegal but not divorce, when Jesus never referenced the former but spoke quite negatively about the latter?" Interesting points.

"But tell me one flaw. I mean quietly over a beer, you know, just admit you cry while watching Oprah or you sometimes struggle with porn or you're jealous of your boss and suddenly there's a bit of velcro on your soul and we can connect. I'm not sure why it happens except maybe it helps me believe I'm not alone, that I'm flawed and you're flawed and we are in this thing together."

"When I was younger, I thought listening was just about learning the contents of someone's mind. I'd always try to finish their thoughts, just to show them that I knew what they were thinking. As I got older, I learned to listen better. I realized that by trying to anticipate their mind, I was ignoring their heart."

I also saw someone on Twitter talking about this fairly common practice among POC to have another talk with their children (especially their sons) around the time they talk about the "birds and the bees". "The talk" for these parents is how to respond if they are in an encounter with a police officer ("yes sirs", visible hands, speaking in a way that isn't always their common vernacular/dialect). That's a talk I'll likely never have with Graves. And that's what privilege looks like."

It could seriously happen to anyone. So scary. Be AWARE.

How incredibly tragic.
